The Berlin Senate (SPD, Linke, Grüne – Socialists, Communists, Greens) wants to freeze rents

The rents in Berlin are to be frozen in Berlin from 2020 for five years.

That’s the intention of city development Senator Katrin Lompscher (left). A “Berlin Rent Law” is to be decided in the fall. It is to apply to existing residential real estate, with the exception of social housing construction and new construction on initial letting.

Tenants can check their rent for elevation. If it is too high, it can be lowered. For new rentals only the last agreed rent may be agreed. Rent increases over 50 cents must be approved. Modernization charges require special approval and notification obligations for landlords.
Violations can be punished with a fine of up to € 500,000.

CDU and Liberals criticize the draft and demand a new construction offensive. Only this can lead to a relief of the Berlin housing market.

Mietendeckel would be a violation of the Constitution

The introduction of a Mietendeckels by the state of Berlin would be unconstitutional. This is the conclusion of a legal opinion by the international law firm Greenberg Traurig on behalf of the Federal Association of Independent Real Estate and Housing Companies (BFW).

This has not been taken care of by the socialists.
